You want to discuss your problem with a psychotherapist but you do not know what type of service is right for you? On this page you will find information about psychological consultation and how it is different from a psychotherapy session. This way you learn if a psychological consultation is what you need.

What is a psychological consultation?

A psychological consultation is a session in which we talk about the problem that affects you in order to plan the best intervention or treatment plan. The consultation can take place both in the office and online. If there is a mental health disorder, I apply psychodiagnostic elements to confirm it.

Depending on the severity and type of mental health condition, I may recommend you to visit a psychiatrist I work with. This recommendation is best suited to confirm the diagnosis and to prescribe drug treatment. The treatment is taken in parallel with the psychotherapy sessions.

If the problem you are facing is beyond my area of expertise, I will recommend a fellow psychotherapist who has the skills to help you achieve your goals.

The psychological consultation is also held at a certain period of time after the end of the psychotherapy treatment. That way we can check the psychological health status and the maintenance of the effects of psychotherapy.

How is a psychological consultation different from psychotherapy?

A psychological consultation is different from psychotherapy through the intervention performed in the office. The psychological consultation is based on the collection of information from the client, on the evaluation of the psychological state and the treatment plan. The intervention is based on the clinical interview and tests may be used for diagnosis and the severity.

The psychological consultation is an assessment of the mental health of each client and plan an appropriate treatment approach. It also may involve guidance on a certain type of intervention to restore health at this level: psychotherapy or drug treatment, or both in parallel.

After you consult a psychologist you will have a clear idea of what you need to do to feel better.

Psychotherapy is the psychological intervention focused on healing the client. Psychotherapy is used not only to treat mental health problems, but also to help manage strong emotional responses and increase the quality of life of the client. Psychotherapy involves several sessions, usually with a stable frequency.
